De-Stress Naturally, Start Living

Supplements for Stress

Do you find yourself becoming more impatient lately? Maybe even experiencing increasing amounts of fatigue and finding it difficult to concentrate even on the simplest things? Even simple things like constantly reaching for a snack or a pack of cigarettes may unknowingly have increased! Well, all these factors which may seem varied and unconnected are actually indicators of high-stress levels.

Are you under stress?

As per the American Psychological Association, most Americans are living with stress levels higher than what psychologists believe to be healthy, while over 22 percent feel that they aren’t able to manage their stress well. Further, stress statistics indicate that over 70 percent Americans regularly experience physiological and psychological symptoms caused by stress. And what’s worrisome is that most people don’t even realise that stress is an issue as it seems to have become the new normal. But over time stress can create havoc for your mind and mood, and even impact your relationships.

Is it your job, personality, family or just Stress?

The thing to keep in mind about stress is that it is like a snowball down the hill. If you don’t stop it in time, it’s going to get bigger and bigger, while speeding up the momentum. Soon, the smallest things will start stressing you out without even realising, but the effect on your health is multifold. After all, not only does stress directly impact your mind and body, but it also encourages certain behaviours that impact the health negatively. Some of the common effects of stress include:

• Headaches and muscle pain
• Insomnia
• Digestive problems
• Nervousness and anxiety
• Emotional outbursts
• Irritability and depression
• Social withdrawal
• Seeking comfort in food, alcohol or tobacco

Thus, we see that something we aren’t even aware of can be wrecking our health and social life terribly. Now, some may be taking over-the-counter medicines for stress, but after a while, these pills become like a crutch. While they are taking the medicine they seem fine, but as soon as they stop, the symptoms reappear. Over time, it becomes like a form of substance abuse, not to forget the side effects on the liver and kidneys. What you actually need is a natural solution that soothes you on the inside so as to enable you to stay calm even during life’s stressful situations.

Know the herbs that help improve sugar metabolism

Aegle marmelos (Bael tree leaf)

Indigenous to South Asia, this herb has been used in several medicines with great results. Commonly known as “Wood Apple”, is considered to be sacred to the Hindus in India and has been known for its medicinal values since 2000 BC. Recognized initially for its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to aid digestion, the Bael leaf extract has been shown in studies to help metabolise glucose and stimulate pancreatic cells.

Several research studies have found that this herb enhances the ability of body cells to utilise the glucose load in the blood by enhancing glucose uptake similar to insulin. Its ability to promote healthy insulin function and glucose metabolism helps protect against sudden spikes and falls of sugar levels. In addition, the extracts of this leaf are also found to be effective in lowering cholesterol and protecting the heart.

Pterocarpus marsupium (Indian Kino Tree)

This herb is widely used for maintaining various metabolic functions. Recent research studies have found that this herb helps modulate blood sugar metabolism to maintain healthy blood sugar levels by stimulating beta cells in the pancreas that produce, store and release the hormone insulin. The tannins in Pterocarpus helps cells use glucose more efficiently and block the sugar absorption in the intestine. Further, its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties protect one from possible diabetic complications.

Curcuma longa (Turmeric)

Native to South Asia, this herb works wonder for lowering blood sugar levels. It helps reduce inflammation, boosts the immune system and protects the heart, kidney and other organs; all important aspects for a diabetic patient. This herb supports pancreatic functions thereby improving insulin absorption and production in the body. Curcuma is regarded as one of the most promising herbs for blood sugar control.

As per a review published in the ‘International Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism’, turmeric has shown great promise in possibly treating and preventing Type 2 diabetes. The active ingredient curcumin helps improve insulin sensitivity there by signalling the muscle and fat tissues to take up glucose from the blood and also inhibits the production of more glucose from liver (gluconeogenesis). In fact, a research in the journal ‘Diabetes Care’, found that pre-diabetic patients those consumed curcumin regularly were less likely to develop type 2 diabetes.

Plumbago zeylanica (Ceylon leadwort root)

The Ceylon leadwort root has been used in traditional Asian medicines for its therapeutic properties as an antioxidant, central nervous system stimulant and possible fat burning supplement. Elevated sugar levels can overtime damage the nerve cells and lead to severe health complications. One of the causative factors implicated in the development of diabetes and its complications is the damage induced by free radicals and hence an herb with antioxidant properties would be more beneficial. Recent studies have indicated that the Ceylon leadwort root extract acts as antioxidant and works to lower damage due to free radicals associated with high sugar levels. The antioxidant property of the herb helps to prevent damage to tiny blood vessels that can result in nerve pain, damage to eye or affect blood circulation.

While these herbs have shown great promise in helping one manage and possible improve their diabetes condition, procuring these herbs may be difficult. To solve this concern, Charak presents Diaguard, a complete herbal supplement that helps the body maintain normal blood sugar levels.

Diagurad promotes healthy glucose metabolism and supports pancreatic cells for healthy function. In Defense of Self

In Defense of Self

Dr Vinayak Dahiwal

Infections are the most common cause of human disease. They range from the common cold, cough & fever to debilitating conditions like chronic hepatitis to life-threatening diseases such as AIDS.

Disease-causing microorganisms that try to get into the body must first move past the body’s external armor, usually the skin or cells lining the body’s internal passageways. The skin provides an imposing barrier to invading microbes. It is generally penetrable only through cuts or tiny abrasions. The digestive and respiratory tracts—both are entry points for a number of microbes—also have their own levels of protection.  Microbes entering the nose can trigger a sneeze or cough reflex to force microbial invaders out of the respiratory passageways. The stomach contains a strong acid that destroys many pathogens that are swallowed with food.

If microbes survive the body’s front-line defenses, they still have to find a way to the underlying cells. These passageways are lined with tightly packed cells covered in a layer of mucus, effectively blocking the transport of many organisms.

Cells with immune function including macrophages, B cells, and T cells, wait for any germ that might bypass the barriers at the surface. The most common disease-causing microbes are bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Each uses a different tactic to infect a person, and, therefore the body’s immune response to these disease-causing microbes is important.

A good immune response not only stops the infection but also prevents recurrence.  This is because, every time an individual meets up with the same antigen, the immune system becomes more equipped to a better response. Immunity can be strong or weak, short-lived or long-lasting, depending on the type of antigen, the amount of antigen, and the route by which it enters the body.

Although scientists have learned much about the immune system, they continue to study how the body launches attacks that destroy invading microbes. In addition, scientists are studying the reasons that direct the human immune response. It is interesting to see that modern research initiatives are also shifting from drug development to validation of the core concepts of Ayurveda.

Traditional know-how about herbs offer the possibility of looking at the complex multimodal nature of Ayurvedic interventions to keep infections at bay.  To site few examples, Curcuma longa with the active ingredient Curcumin assists to enhance immunity in general. Research has shown that curcumin modulates the activation of cell levels involved in host response. The extract of Trichosanthes diocia reinforces the entire immune system to fight against common infections.

Immunrich is one such unique formulation that helps in building a strong immune system. Immunrich aids in maintaining the natural protective barriers. This unique supplement helps sustain a strong immune system through the increase of healthy white blood cells activity thereby resulting in optimum health.
